Raphael Rogiński feat. Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė present Žaltys(PL/LT)
Polish guitarist, composer and improviser Raphael Rogiński was commissioned to create a new work for Unsound 2023, inspired by Lithuanian snake mythology. Featuring Lithuania’s Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė, the work will be released by Unsound as an album, titled ‘Žaltys’. Ahead of the release, Rogiński performs a special sunrise show with Jurgelevičiūtė for Ephemera and W Brzask.
Rogiński interweaves his classical training with research in musicology and ethnomusicology, playing music from various cultures – including Turkish, Bedouin, Sami, Persian, Armenian and Eastern European Jewish – and American blues, jazz and folk – digging into the symbolism and resonance of these interconnected sounds. In 2009, he re-interpreted the work of Bach using prepared guitars on 'Bach Bleach', later taking a similarly unique approach to the jazz canon on 2015's 'Plays John Coltrane and Langston Hughes African Mystic Music'.
Singer and kanklės player Jurgelevičiūtė is a founding member of folk-ambient band Merope, and has found innovative ways to blend Lithuanian folk minimalism with disparate sounds from across the map, working with artists like Shahzad Ismaily, Baba Sissoko, and Senegalese kora master Solo Cissokho.
